What are the benefits of zoning a system?
Zoning allows you a higher level of control for heating and cooling temperatures by dividing your home into two specific areas (zones) where temperatures can be individually controlled. Zoning is particularly effective and often needed in multiple story homes—to better match the heating and cooling needs on different floors.
We have designed several other systems in our homes on a zone basis, such as lighting and water. When you turn on water at the sink, all the water in your home does not come on. When you turn on lights in your hall, all the lights in your home do not switch on. In both cases, the water and electricity turn on only at a specific location, saving you energy and money.
The same principle applies for a zoned temperature system. You only heat or cool half of your home at a time. Does it make sense to cool downstairs when you’re sleeping upstairs where it’s 8 degrees hotter? At what cost? These are the types of questions to ask yourself when considering whether zoning your system is the right choice for you.
